I received a frantic call this morning that woke me from my gurgling, rock show-induced slumber. It was one of my best friends posing me a question: How do you handle one of your favorite bands breaking up?
I had to pause a second (to clear the smoke-scum from my throat, roll over and gain consciousness.) Honestly, I don't think I'd thought about it that much lately. I've been through a number of band break-ups as a fan, and now it just goes with the territory. But then...I really got to thinking about it.
There's this feeling you get when someone young passes on...that sense of loss is somehow compounded by the loss of potential. Thankfully, this call was not about someone passing on. This was just about people growing apart and moving on.
The breakup of the Beatles, the death of Kurt Cobain, Shannon Hoon, Syd Barrett, John Lennon... are all running through my mind. How did people deal with it?
They mourn for what will never be, and remember what was received from their love of music and collaboration.
The part that most people forget to think about is the birth of new potential. Each time a band parts ways, I think, "What's next?" rather than, "What was will never be again." Every breakup has the potential to free artists from existing patterns and imbibe them with a fresh concept of life and music overall.
Does anyone have a count of the number of bands that Eric Clapton was a part of before his rebirth into his solo career?
I'm never giving up the memories and music that the bands I've been exposed to have gifted to the world. ...And I am never going to give up the hope that the music boiling in their blood will erupt into a new creature as strong and beautiful as the last.
Note to Brian K.: This was not the kind of rant I'd planned on publishing next. Hugs to the whole crew.
Thank you to all the musicians who have helped me through life day after day... Holding me when I'm hurt, screaming for my anger, swooning for my unrequited partnerships, and writing the "soundtrack of my life." Forever an admirer, fan, lobbyist, and some day, I dream, a peer...

In other news...
Rotoglow, Margaret Heater, Malvado, Fidel, and Soveren will be taking a trip out to Downtime in New York City as part of an Unsung Hero Concert on Thursday, August 29th.
Keep looking for more reviews to be posted in the near future. Seems as though people want to hear opinions, and I'm more than ready to allow this site to be a forum for them. Please feel free to post your own opinions about shows you've been to in the Message Board. I love when people share them with everyone! Discussion is part of what makes a bunch of people looking in the same place a community rather than just people surfing the net. Speaking of music communities...there are some major conference developments going on. First of all, there's the Dewey Beach Music Fest September 27th-29th in Delaware. I plan to attend. Check their site for details: http://www.deweybeachfest.com. Coming up after that will be the Millenium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA. February 13-16, 2003. Website:http://musicconference.net
. And lastly, but certainly not least is the IMC 2003 Independant Musicians Conference in Philladelphia August 28th - 31st, 2003. I know that's a ways off, but registration deadlines for showcasing are coming up quickly, and you have the opportunity to have a say in how the conference is structured during the planning stages. See site for details: http://www.IMC2003.com.
